Château de Montségur, located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, is more than just a castle; it's a monument steeped in history and legend. The castle's location on a pog (a volcanic pluton) at an altitude of 1,207 meters dominates the landscape. The Occitan name Montsegùr (French Montségur) translates to "safe hill," a fitting description for this imposing fortress.
Originally built in the early 13th century, Montségur became a center of Cathar activity, providing refuge for those fleeing persecution by the Catholic Church. In 1244, after a prolonged siege, the castle fell, and over 200 Cathars were burned alive for refusing to renounce their faith, marking a tragic end to the Cathar movement in the region.
The castle ruins that stand today are not the original Cathar fortress but a later reconstruction. Nevertheless, they offer a glimpse into the past and provide a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding area. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, learn about its history, and reflect on the events that transpired within its walls. The site includes a museum in the nearby village that displays archaeological finds and provides historical context.

Getting There
Driving
Montségur Castle is located off the D9 in the Ariège department. From Toulouse, it's approximately a 90-minute drive south. The nearest town is Lavelanet, about 12 kilometers away. Follow the D9 to a parking area at the base of the pog, just a kilometer from Montségur village. Parking is free. From the parking area, it's a 30-35 minute walk up a mountain path to reach the castle. Be aware that the road from Lavelanet is a mountain road and may take about 30 minutes to navigate.
Public Transport
While public transportation options are limited, you can take a train or bus to nearby towns like Foix or Lavelanet. From Pamiers, the 450 liO bus service will take you through the Cathar Pyrenees, specifically from Mirepoix to Montségur. From Lavelanet, you can take the 451 liO bus from Foix. From either of these locations, you'll need to take a taxi or local bus to Montségur village and then walk to the castle. Bus fare from Pamiers to Montségur is approximately €2-€5. A taxi from Lavelanet to Montségur will cost around €20-€30.
Walking
From the parking area at the base of the pog, follow the marked trail uphill to Château de Montségur. The walk takes approximately 30-35 minutes and is moderately challenging due to the steep, uneven path. Wear appropriate footwear and bring water. The ticket office is located on the way to the castle.
