Quedas do Musseleje: A Hidden Angolan Paradise
Experience the raw beauty of Angola at Calandula Falls, one of Africa's most impressive and secluded natural wonders.
Calandula Falls, one of Africa's largest waterfalls by volume, plunges 105 meters (344 feet) into the Lucala River. Situated in the Malanje Province, these falls offer a pristine natural environment away from mass tourism.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Driving
From the town of Calandula, the falls are easily accessible by car. Follow the signs towards the Pousada de Calandula. A short distance before reaching the Pousada, there is a checkpoint where an entrance fee is collected. As of January 2022, the fee was 500 Kwanzas per person and 1000 Kwanzas per vehicle. The road to the Pousada is in poor condition in some sections.
Walking
Once at the Pousada de Calandula, walking trails lead to various viewpoints of the falls. Some trails lead to the top of the falls, while others descend closer to the base. Be aware that the trails can be muddy, especially during the rainy season. Local guides may offer their services to accompany you on these trails; negotiate the price beforehand.
