Calandula Falls: Angola's Majestic Cascade

Calandula Falls, also known as Quedas de Kalandula in Portuguese, is a breathtaking natural attraction located in the Malanje Province of Angola. Formerly named Duque de Bragança Falls, these falls cascade down 105 meters (344 feet) and stretch 400 meters (1,300 feet) wide, making them one of the largest waterfalls in Africa by volume. The falls carry water from the Lucala River to the Kwanza River.Unlike some of the more well-known waterfalls on the continent, Calandula Falls remains a relatively untouched haven of tranquility. The surrounding landscape is lush and green, characterized by tropical forests and diverse plant life, offering a truly immersive experience in nature. Visitors can explore the falls from various viewpoints, including those at the top near Calandula town and closer to the base from Pousada de Calandula.The best time to visit Calandula Falls is during the rainy season, from November to April, when the water flow is at its peak. However, be prepared for muddy conditions during this time. In addition to the falls themselves, the Malanje province offers other attractions such as the Pungo Andongo rock formations and the Musselje Falls.
