Saint John's Cathedral: A Symbol of Resilience

Saint John's Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba, is an Anglican church that stands proudly on a hilltop in St. John's, Antigua. This iconic landmark is the third iteration of the church, with previous structures succumbing to devastating earthquakes in 1683 and 1745. The current cathedral, consecrated in 1848, showcases a blend of neo-Baroque and Caribbean architectural styles. Designed by architect Thomas Fuller, the cathedral features impressive twin towers, standing 70 feet high, that are visible from across the city. The exterior is made of freestone, while the interior reveals a unique pitch pine structure, ingeniously designed to reinforce the building against earthquakes and hurricanes. This has earned the cathedral the nickname "a building within a building." Inside, visitors are greeted by dark pine furnishings, stained glass windows, and marble tablets salvaged from the previous churches. The iron gates at the southern entrance, dating back to 1789, are flanked by statues of St. John the Divine and St. John the Baptist, said to have been seized from a French ship in 1756.
