Descabezado Grande is a prominent stratovolcano located in the Maule region of Chile, near the town of San Clemente. Rising to a height of 3,953 meters (12,969 feet), its most distinctive feature is the 1.4-kilometer-wide, ice-filled caldera at its summit, which gives the volcano its name, meaning 'Large Headless One' in Spanish. Formed from andesite and rhyodacite lava flows and pyroclastic deposits, Descabezado Grande has a basal diameter of approximately 10 by 12 kilometers and a total volume of about 30 cubic kilometers. It lies within a 20-by-30-kilometer volcanic field, alongside Cerro Azul. The only recorded eruption occurred in 1932 from a vent on its upper NNE flank. Though relatively quiet, weak fumarolic activity has been reported on the western slope. Today, Descabezado Grande attracts hikers, nature enthusiasts, and photographers. The climb is challenging, and it's recommended to visit during the local summer months, between October and May. The surrounding landscape offers diverse flora and fauna, with opportunities for wildlife observation.
