Discover more about Estatua

The Estatua de la Libertad, located in the heart of Plaza Independencia in San Miguel de Tucumán, is more than just a statue; it's a powerful symbol of freedom and a testament to the city's rich history. Created by the talented Tucumán sculptor Lola Mora, the statue was inaugurated in 1904 and quickly became a focal point of the city. The statue depicts a woman draped in flowing garments, breaking free from chains. This imagery embodies the spirit of liberty and commemorates Argentina's independence. The statue is made of marble and stands as a striking piece of art, reflecting the artistic talent of Lola Mora. At the statue's feet are a broken sword, chains and shackles, all symbols of the struggle for independence.Originally, Lola Mora was commissioned in 1903 to create two bas-reliefs and an allegorical group for the Casa Histórica. However, upon arriving, she realized that the statue would disrupt the aesthetic of the monument. It was then decided that the sculpture would be placed in the center of Plaza Independencia. The statue's placement wasn't without controversy, as some considered it offensive to displace the statue of Manuel Belgrano.Today, the Estatua de la Libertad remains a must-see attraction in San Miguel de Tucumán, inviting visitors to reflect on the country's journey to independence.
