Car
From the main town of Humahuaca, head south on Route 9 (RN9) towards the town of Tilcara. Continue for approximately 16 km until you see a sign for the Abra del Gigante. The unpaved road leading to the site is well-marked. Be prepared for a bumpy ride, as the road may have some rough patches. The total drive time from Humahuaca to Abra del Gigante is about 30 minutes. Make sure to check your vehicle’s fuel and tire condition before heading out, as services may be limited near the site.
Public Transport
From Humahuaca, take a local bus towards Tilcara. Buses leave frequently from the central bus terminal. The fare is usually around ARS 150 and the journey takes about 30 minutes. Once you arrive in Tilcara, you will need to arrange for a taxi or shared van to take you to Abra del Gigante. Make sure to negotiate the fare before getting in; it should be around ARS 1000 for a round trip. Inform the driver that you wish to visit Abra del Gigante, and confirm the pickup time for your return trip.
Hiking
For the more adventurous, you can hike to Abra del Gigante from the town of Humahuaca. Begin your hike by following the trail that leads out of Humahuaca towards the mountains. This route offers stunning views of the Quebrada de Humahuaca landscape. The hike is challenging and can take around 3-4 hours, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring enough water and snacks for the journey.
