While initially intended as the site for Güemes' monument, ideological differences led to its relocation. Today, the plaza provides a green and open space for relaxation and recreation. On Saturdays, it transforms into a bustling artisan fair, showcasing local crafts, textiles, ceramics, and regional foods. General Martín Miguel de Güemes (1785-1821) played a crucial role in Argentina's fight for independence. Born in Salta, he led the defense of the north against Spanish royalist forces. His military strategies and leadership were instrumental in securing Argentina's freedom. He was the first governor of Salta elected without intervention from Buenos Aires. Güemes died in 1821 and is considered a national hero.
