  • Public Transport

    From Bariloche, take the Mi Bus number 55 to Cerro Catedral. The bus departs from the city center, with varying departure points depending on the hour. Check the current schedule, as the bus runs every two hours. A roundtrip ticket costs approximately 592 ARS. The bus ride takes about 35 minutes, dropping you off at the base of Cerro Catedral. From there, follow the signs for the 'Frey' trail.

    From the Cerro Catedral parking lot, locate the wooden sign with 'FREY' in large letters and a carved wooden backpacker. This marks the start of the traditional trail. Follow the well-marked path, which initially heads away from the ski resort. The hike to Refugio Frey is approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) and typically takes 4 hours, ascending 750 meters. The trail is well-defined with wooden and metal footbridges crossing several small streams.

Refugio Frey, a picturesque mountain hut (refugio) within Argentina's Nahuel Huapi National Park, is a haven for climbers and trekkers alike. Situated at 1,700 meters (5,577 feet) above sea level, the refugio lies at the foot of the Frey spire, beside the turquoise waters of Laguna Toncek. The surrounding landscape is dominated by dramatic granite towers, offering unparalleled opportunities for traditional climbing.The refugio is named in honor of engineer Emilio Frey, a key figure in Patagonian exploration and conservation. Frey was a member of the border commission led by Francisco Moreno in 1895, park administrator of the Nahuel Huapi National Park, and one of the founders and long-time president of the Club Andino Bariloche. The Club Andino Bariloche (CAB) was formed in 1931, and the refuge bearing Frey's name opened on February 17, 1957, to celebrate the club's 25th anniversary. The refuge retains its original construction elements and forms.Since its opening, Refugio Frey has been a hub for mountaineering, with climbers drawn to the quality of its rock. The area offers a range of climbing routes, from the iconic 'Normal Route' on the Frey spire to crack climbs on the Main Tower. Beyond climbing, Refugio Frey serves as a base for exploring the surrounding network of trails, including the popular multi-day '4 refuges' circuit.Visitors can reach Refugio Frey via several hiking trails, with the most common route starting from the Cerro Catedral ski resort. The traditional route is about 12 km and takes approximately 4 hours. Other routes include the challenging Picada Eslovena from Lago Gutierrez and a summer route from the Cerro Catedral ski lifts.The refugio provides basic amenities, including meals, overnight accommodation for 35 people, and restrooms. Camping is also permitted near the refugio. Staying overnight allows visitors to experience the stunning sunrises and sunsets over the jagged peaks. A black cat named Emilio resides at the refuge and keeps rodents away.
