    Discover more about Laguna Turquesa

Laguna Turquesa, or Turquoise Lagoon, is a breathtaking glacial lake hidden in the Andes Fueguinos, near Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. Often considered a lesser-known alternative to the popular Laguna Esmeralda, it offers a more secluded and tranquil experience for nature lovers. The hike to Laguna Turquesa is a moderate to challenging trek, generally taking 2 to 3 hours round trip. The 4.5 km trail winds through diverse landscapes, including lush forests and rugged alpine terrain. The trail runs along an old axe cutter's track, where you can still see cut and marked trees. While the trail is well-marked, it includes steep inclines that can be slippery, especially after rain or snow, making good footwear and balance essential. Upon reaching the lagoon, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the vivid turquoise waters nestled in a glacial cirque. The unique coloring comes from the glacial sediments suspended in the water. From this vantage point, you can also glimpse Laguna Esmeralda in the distance. The lagoon is located above the treeline, providing unobstructed views of the surrounding Tierra Mayor Valley and the Sierra Alvear. While the hike is accessible year-round, it's important to plan ahead and take extra precautions during autumn and winter. Reduced daylight hours, sub-zero temperatures, and the presence of mud, ice, and snow require appropriate clothing and footwear.
