Fort Apache Historical Park is located off Highway 73, approximately 5 miles south of Whiteriver, Arizona. From Whiteriver, head south on Highway 73. Look for signs indicating the turnoff for Fort Apache. Follow the road to the park entrance. Admission to the park is $5 per adult, with discounts for seniors and students. There is an additional $5 fee per vehicle for after-hours and holiday visits. Parking is available at the visitor center.

Fort Apache Historical Park, located on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, offers a unique opportunity to delve into the intertwined histories of the White Mountain Apache Tribe and the U.S. Army. Established in 1870, the fort initially served as a military camp before becoming a permanent facility that played a crucial role in the Apache Wars. The park interprets the complex relationship between the Apache and other Native American tribes, as well as the fort's later conversion into a Bureau of Indian Affairs boarding school.Visitors can explore nearly 30 buildings dating from the 1870s to the 1930s, including General Crook's Cabin, a log cabin from 1871. The Nohwike' Bágowa, or White Mountain Apache Cultural Center and Museum, showcases Apache history and culture through exhibits, artifacts, and multimedia presentations, including a traditional gowa (Apache home). The museum also houses a shop offering Apache basketry, beadwork, and other arts.A self-guided walking tour allows visitors to explore the historic buildings and learn about their construction and use. The Fort Apache Cemetery, located a short distance from the main grounds, offers a somber reminder of the lives lost during this period. For those seeking outdoor activities, the park features recreational trails, including a 1.4-mile loop through East Fork Canyon, which passes by an Apache scout camp and an Ancestral Pueblo village.Four miles west of Fort Apache, visitors can explore the Kinishba Ruins National Historic Landmark, an ancient pueblo site occupied by Zuni and Hopi ancestors until around 1400 AD. Checking in at the Fort Apache museum is required before visiting the ruins to obtain an interpretive guide.
