Driving

From Whiteriver, AZ, head west on AZ-73. Turn south onto Fort Apache Road and drive to the Fort Apache Historic Park. Obtain a permit and information at the White Mountain Apache Cultural Center (Nohwike' Bagowa). From the museum, Kinishba Ruins is approximately 4 miles west. Follow the unpaved road to the Kinishba Ruins site. There are no set hours for visiting the ruins. Admission to the museum and historic park, which includes access to the ruins, is $5.00 per adult and $3.00 for seniors (64+) and students.

Kinishba Ruins, also known by the Apache name kį dałbaa meaning 'brown house' and in Hopi oral traditions as Mäi'povi (Place of Abundant Snakeweed) , is an impressive archaeological site located on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in eastern Arizona. This 600-room pueblo was constructed by the Mogollon people, with influences from the Anasazi culture, between 1250 and 1400 AD. At its peak, Kinishba may have housed up to 1,000 residents within its multi-storied masonry room blocks and communal courtyards.The site consists of nine major building mounds, offering a glimpse into the architectural and cultural practices of the Western Pueblo people. The complex included two large apartment blocks and several smaller buildings, with courtyards used for religious ceremonies. The rooms averaged 14 by 12 feet and had a fire pit in the center. Kinishba was long known to the Apache people, and it's believed that Conquistadors may have visited the site. The first written account in English appeared in 1892 by archaeologist Adolph Bandelier.Between 1931 and 1940, Byron Cummings from the University of Arizona led excavation and restoration efforts, partially restoring the site. Today, the White Mountain Apache Tribe cares for the site. Visitors can explore the ruins and learn about the history and culture of the Mogollon people. To fully appreciate the site, it is recommended to purchase a guidebook at the Nohwiké Bágowa Museum.
