Discover more about Hellsgate Wilderness

The Hellsgate Wilderness, a 37,440-acre protected area within the Tonto National Forest in Gila County, Arizona, presents a rugged landscape sculpted by the Mogollon Rim. Established in 1984, it's a place of dramatic elevation changes, from 2,960 feet to 6,440 feet at Horse Mountain, offering both physical challenges and stunning vistas. The heart of the wilderness is Tonto Creek, a perennial stream that has carved a 1,000-foot-deep canyon through the area. This waterway creates emerald pools and supports diverse wildlife, including black bears, mountain lions, deer, and various fish species. Historically, the area was home to the Salado people in the 13th and 14th centuries, followed by the Apache. Evidence of their presence can be found by observant visitors. The wilderness also holds a unique piece of aviation history: in 1927, a plane carrying MGM's Leo the Lion made an emergency landing here, leading to the naming of Leo Canyon. Today, Hellsgate Wilderness provides a sanctuary for those seeking challenging hikes and immersion in nature. With more than 10 trail networks, ranging from moderate to rigorous, this is the perfect spot for experienced hikers and adventure enthusiasts alike.
