Discover more about Strawberry School House - One Room

The Strawberry School House, nestled in the picturesque Strawberry Valley, is a tangible link to Arizona's pioneering past. Built in 1885, this one-room log cabin served as the heart of the community, functioning not only as a school but also as a chapel, meeting place, and social center. The schoolhouse was constructed from locally sourced pine logs, carefully squared and fitted together by the hands of determined settlers. Inside, double-hung windows provided ventilation, while a wood-burning stove offered warmth during the chilly mountain winters. The building housed essential furnishings, including a teacher's desk, student desks, a world globe, and even an organ, reflecting the community's commitment to education, culture, and spirituality. Instruction continued here until 1916, after which the building fell into disrepair. However, in the 1960s, a renewed appreciation for its historical significance led to its restoration. Today, the Strawberry School House stands as a fully restored museum, complete with a late-19th-century classroom exhibit. Visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a bygone era, gaining insight into the challenges and triumphs of early Arizona settlers. The Strawberry School House was formally dedicated as a Historical Monument on August 15, 1981, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 10, 2005.
