Discover more about Historic Gillespie Dam Bridge

The Historic Gillespie Dam Bridge is a testament to early 20th-century engineering, gracefully arching over the Gila River in Maricopa County, Arizona. Built in 1927, the 1,662-foot-long bridge was a crucial part of U.S. Route 80, connecting San Diego, California, and Tybee Island, Georgia. Before the bridge, travelers crossed the Gila River via a concrete apron near the Gillespie Dam, often disrupted by flooding. The bridge's construction, costing $320,000 (approximately $4.52 million in 2023), provided a reliable passage. Its design features a series of rigid through trusses, demonstrating innovative engineering for its time. While U.S. Route 80 was realigned in 1956, the Gillespie Dam Bridge remains a significant historical landmark. A restoration project in 2012 enhanced the bridge and added an educational interpretive center. Today, visitors can explore the bridge, learn about its history, and appreciate the surrounding desert landscape. The bridge is also near Native American petroglyphs.
