    To reach Tonto Lower Cliff Dwelling, head towards Roosevelt, AZ. From Phoenix, take US-60 East to AZ-188 North. Follow AZ-188 for approximately 20 miles until you reach the entrance to Tonto National Monument. There is a designated parking area near the visitor center. Entrance fee is $10 per person (16 and older). Note that State Route 88 from Phoenix is not recommended for RV trailers or vehicles with low clearance.

    Limited public transportation options are available. Take a Greyhound bus to Globe, AZ. From Globe, arrange for a taxi or rideshare to Tonto National Monument in Roosevelt, as direct public transport is scarce. From the visitor center, hike the moderately steep, 0.5-mile paved trail to the Lower Cliff Dwelling. Taxi/Rideshare from Globe to Tonto National Monument is approximately $60-$80.

The Salado people occupied the Tonto Basin from approximately 1250 to 1450 CE, leaving behind a rich cultural legacy.Built within a natural alcove, the Lower Cliff Dwelling provided shelter and protection from the elements. The walls were constructed using rocks gathered from the cave floor and surrounding hillsides, while pine and juniper roof beams were carried down from the mountains. Each family likely occupied a single room, complete with a fire pit and a hatchway to access the second story and roof. The dwelling's design reflects a deep understanding of the local climate, with small doorways that helped regulate temperatures.Today, visitors can explore the ruins and imagine what life was like for the Salado people centuries ago. The monument is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
