Discover more about Grand Canyon Caverns

The Grand Canyon Caverns, located along historic Route 66 near Peach Springs, Arizona, offer a fascinating glimpse into the Earth's ancient past. These caverns, formed over millions of years, are among the largest dry caverns in the United States. Unlike wet caves, the lack of moisture here means that stalactites and stalagmites are rare, showcasing a different kind of subterranean beauty. Originally discovered in 1927 by Walter Peck, who was on his way to a poker game, the caverns have a rich history. Peck initially charged visitors a small fee to be lowered into the cave via rope, a practice he jokingly called "dope on a rope". In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) helped to improve access by constructing a staircase. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s, the U.S. government designated the caverns as a fallout shelter, stocking it with supplies for 2,000 people, which remain on display today. Today, visitors can explore the caverns through a variety of guided tours. The standard tour takes you 200 feet underground via elevator, where you'll walk along paved pathways and see formations like the Chapel of the Ages and the Mammoth Dome. For the more adventurous, there are spelunking tours that involve climbing and crawling through undeveloped sections of the caverns. The caverns also offer unique experiences such as dining in the underground Grotto and even staying overnight in the Cavern Suite, a hotel room located deep within the cave. The Grand Canyon Caverns are not only a geological wonder but also a testament to the history and resilience of Route 66. With its unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance, the caverns offer an unforgettable experience for travelers of all ages.
