Discover more about Horse Valley Historic Ranch

Nestled within the expansive Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, the Horse Valley Historic Ranch provides a tangible link to Arizona's ranching heritage. Established in 1916 and later known as the Waring Ranch, this site was the heart of Jonathan Deyo 'Slim' Waring's cattle operations on the remote Shivwits Plateau. Waring gradually assembled the ranch between 1925 and 1953, building it into a significant cattle operation. The ranch itself comprises several key structures, including a cabin, a barn, corrals, fences, and stock tanks. The ranch house, a rectangular log cabin, stands as a testament to the construction methods of the era. The circular corrals, built from upright natural log posts, offer a glimpse into the practical needs of a working ranch. Horse Valley Ranch embodies the characteristics of a remote cattle ranch headquarters from an era before modernization. Its location within the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument ensures its preservation for future generations, allowing visitors to step back in time and envision the challenges and triumphs of early ranchers in this rugged landscape.
