Discover more about Eisendrath House

Nestled in the hills of Tempe, Arizona, the Eisendrath House, also known as the "pink house on the hill", is a remarkable example of Pueblo Revival architecture. Built in 1930 as a winter residence for Rose Eisendrath, the widow of a wealthy Chicago glove manufacturer, the house reflects the influx of affluent Northerners seeking refuge in the Southwest's warm climate. Rose Eisendrath, after being denied entry to a resort due to her Jewish heritage, purchased 44 acres to build her own winter retreat. The house was designed by architect Robert T. Evans, who masterfully employed adobe construction techniques. The two-story structure, the largest and best-preserved of its style in Tempe, features thick adobe walls, a flat roof, and recessed windows, all characteristic of Pueblo Revival design. The house originally sat on 44 acres and was called Lomaki, Hopi for “beautiful home”. After Rose Eisendrath's death in 1936, the house passed through several owners and eventually fell into disrepair. In the early 2000s, the City of Tempe acquired the property and undertook a comprehensive restoration, renaming it the Eisendrath Center for Water Conservation. Today, the house hosts exhibits on sustainable living and water conservation, offering educational programs and tours. Visitors can explore the house's historic interiors, learn about its architectural significance, and discover its role in promoting environmental awareness.
