Discover more about Las Saetas

Las Saetas, located in the Old Fort Lowell neighborhood of Tucson, Arizona, is a significant historical landmark with a rich and layered past. Originally built in 1873 as the Post Trader's Store for Camp Lowell, it served as a mercantile center for soldiers and officers stationed at the fort. The store provided general merchandise, and also functioned as a saloon and gambling hall. Following the fort's decommissioning in 1891, the property transitioned through various uses, including a farm headquarters and even a health ranch for tuberculosis patients, before falling into disrepair. In 1934, the Bolsius family purchased the ruins and embarked on an ambitious reconstruction project. Led by Dutch-born artist Charles Bolsius, along with Nan and Pete Bolsius, they reimagined the structure as a Pueblo Revival hacienda, incorporating hand-carved doors, exposed beams, and other distinctive architectural elements. Las Saetas became a hub for a burgeoning artist colony in the mid-20th century, hosting cultural events and art exhibits. Today, Las Saetas stands as a testament to the diverse history of the region, reflecting the influences of the military, farming communities, and artistic movements that have shaped Southern Arizona. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and contributes to the unique character of the Fort Lowell Historic District.
