Mystery Castle: A Phoenix Enigma

Mystery Castle stands as a unique landmark in Phoenix, Arizona, a testament to a father's love and ingenuity. Built by Boyce Luther Gulley in the 1930s and 1940s, the castle is located in the foothills of South Mountain Park. Gulley, upon learning he had tuberculosis, moved from Seattle to Phoenix with the dream of creating a permanent castle for his daughter, Mary Lou, reminiscent of their sandcastle-building days. Constructed without formal architectural plans, permits, or training, Gulley used salvaged materials, including stone, adobe, automobile parts, and other discarded items, to erect the three-story, 18-room structure. The castle features 13 fireplaces, a chapel, a dungeon, and folk art embellishments, reflecting Gulley's resourcefulness and artistic vision. Electricity and plumbing weren't added until 1992. After Gulley's death in 1945, Mary Lou and her mother, Frances, moved into the Mystery Castle. In 1948, a feature in Life Magazine brought national attention to the castle, solidifying its name and reputation. Mary Lou and Frances began offering tours to the public, sharing the castle's story and its many eccentric details. Mary Lou continued to live in the castle and give tours until her death in 2010. Today, the Mystery Castle is maintained by the Mystery Castle Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving this unique piece of Arizona history. Although tours have been suspended at times due to vandalism and other issues, the castle remains a Phoenix Point of Pride, drawing visitors with its quirky charm and captivating story.
