Discover more about Historic City Hall

Located at 125 W Washington St in downtown Phoenix, the Historic City Hall is a significant landmark reflecting the city's growth and history. Constructed in 1929, this elegant structure showcases neoclassical architecture, featuring grand columns and a detailed limestone facade. Originally, the building served as a joint facility for both the Phoenix City Hall and the Maricopa County Courthouse. This collaboration was born out of necessity in the early 1900s when both the city and county outgrew their existing facilities. The city needed a new, larger city hall, and the county could not expand its building due to fire risk. In 1927, the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce convinced city and county officials to team up on the project. The city and county occupied separate sections of the building when it opened. The fifth and sixth floors even housed the county jail. However, Phoenix's rapid growth eventually rendered the joint building inadequate for both occupants. In 1957, the city approved a dedicated city hall, and in 1964, the county completed a new government complex. Today, the Superior Court still uses the Old City Hall/Maricopa County Courthouse building. Visitors can also explore the Maricopa County Justice Museum located inside.
