Discover more about Soleri Bridge

The Soleri Bridge and Plaza, conceived by the visionary Paolo Soleri, stands as a testament to the harmony between human innovation and the natural world. More than a mere pedestrian bridge, it functions as a solar calendar and a gathering place along the Scottsdale Waterfront. The bridge's design incorporates elements that celebrate solar events, connecting people to the rhythms of the sun and the passage of time. Completed in 2010, the Soleri Bridge is oriented on a true north axis, allowing the sun to cast shadows and create a shaft of light through a six-inch gap between its 64-foot pylons. This design feature marks solar noon, with the length of the shadow varying depending on the time of year. During the winter solstice, the shadow is at its longest, while during the summer solstice, no shadow is cast. The bridge's structure narrows from 27 feet on the south side to 18 feet on the north. The adjacent 22,000-square-foot plaza features totemic panels that reflect Soleri's signature earth-casting techniques, reminiscent of his work at Cosanti and Arcosanti. These 3,500-pound panels were individually designed by Soleri and produced at Cosanti in Scottsdale. The plaza also houses the Goldwater Bell assembly, a bronze bell crafted by Soleri in 1969, adding an intimate gallery setting to the open space. The Soleri Bridge and Plaza not only serves as a landmark but also enhances connectivity within Scottsdale. It links the Scottsdale Waterfront to the Southbridge and the Fifth Avenue Shopping District, promoting pedestrian, bicycle, and equestrian traffic. The bridge and plaza have become a vibrant public space, hosting events and drawing visitors to experience the intersection of art, architecture, and nature.
