Car
If you're driving, start from the Tonto National Forest Visitor Center located at 40329 N. Cave Creek Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85032. Head north on Cave Creek Rd for about 10 miles until you reach the intersection with Carefree Hwy (AZ-74). Turn right on Carefree Hwy, and after approximately 6 miles, merge onto AZ-17 N toward Flagstaff. Continue for about 24 miles, then take exit 223 for AZ-101 Loop N toward Scottsdale. Merge onto AZ-101 Loop N and follow it for about 14 miles. Take exit 39 for Pima Rd, then turn right onto Pima Rd. After about 2 miles, turn left onto E Happy Valley Rd, and continue until you see the signs for the Gateway Loop Trailhead parking area on your left.

Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, start by taking the Valley Metro Light Rail to the nearest station which is 'North Scottsdale'. From there, you can catch the Scottsdale Trolley (Route 72) heading towards the Scottsdale Airpark. Get off at the stop closest to Pima Rd and E Happy Valley Rd. From that point, it's a short walk (about 1 mile) to the Gateway Loop Trailhead. Make sure to follow E Happy Valley Rd until you see the entrance to the trailhead parking area.
