Agate House: A Window into Puebloan Life

Agate House stands as a testament to the ingenuity of the Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited the Petrified Forest area centuries ago. Constructed between 1050 and 1300 AD, this eight-room pueblo is unique for its use of petrified wood as the primary building material. The agatized wood was carefully laid in place using clay mortar, a departure from the typical sandstone construction of the region.Archaeological evidence suggests that Agate House was likely occupied for a relatively short period. The scarcity of artifacts discovered at the site indicates that it may have been a seasonal residence or perhaps a meeting place for the surrounding community. The structure's size and the effort required to build and maintain it suggest that it was likely a year-round residence for a single family. Fire pits were discovered in two rooms.Today, Agate House is a partially reconstructed site, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and imagine life in this ancient dwelling. The reconstruction, carried out by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, provides a tangible connection to the past. While the reconstruction isn't a completely accurate replication, it allows visitors to envision the daily lives of the people who once called it home. The Agate House Trail is a 2-mile round trip hike from the Rainbow Forest Museum parking lot. The first half-mile of this trail is paved and suitable for strollers and various mobility equipment.
