Discover more about Crystal Forest

Stroll through time on the Crystal Forest Trail, a 0.75-mile paved loop that winds through a landscape scattered with the glistening remains of ancient trees. Located about 20 miles south of the park's north entrance, this area is renowned for its exceptional concentration of petrified wood, much of it sparkling with quartz crystals that formed within the logs over millennia. The name 'Crystal Forest' is derived from the quartz and amethyst crystals that once lined the hollows of these petrified logs. Sadly, in the late 1800s, before the area was protected as a national monument, many of these logs were dynamited by gem hunters seeking these semi-precious stones. The chips and fragments left behind serve as a reminder of this destructive past, while the remaining crystals still captivate visitors today. As you walk the trail, imagine a lush, subtropical forest teeming with life. During the Triassic Period, this area was located near the equator on the supercontinent Pangea. Over millions of years, as the continent shifted and the Colorado Plateau uplifted, the forest was buried under layers of sediment, transforming the trees into stone. The minerals in the sediment replaced the organic material, preserving the trees' structure and creating the colorful crystals that make this area so unique. The Crystal Forest Trail offers an accessible and awe-inspiring experience for all ages. The paved path makes it easy to explore the area, and the relatively flat terrain ensures a comfortable walk. Be sure to bring water and sun protection, as the desert environment can be harsh, especially during the summer months. And remember, it is strictly prohibited to remove any petrified wood or other materials from the park.
