Created in the mid-1970s by David McMahon, Sr., a local Angus cattle breeder and beer distributor, the can quickly became a landmark for Lavaca. McMahon commissioned Earl Harris to paint the silo, and the result was a 50-foot-tall advertisement for his favorite brew. According to the can's label, it could hold 8,734,902 fluid ounces of beer, enough to fill eight swimming pools. The Giant Budweiser Can has been featured in a Budweiser commercial and is a popular spot for photographs. While simple, the Giant Budweiser Can represents a slice of Americana and local history. Although the surrounding land is private property, the can is easily visible from the road, inviting travelers to stop and admire this unique piece of roadside art.
