Mount Nebo State Park, rising 1,350 feet above the Arkansas River Valley, has been a popular destination since the late 19th century. The mountain was named after the biblical Mount Nebo, from which Moses viewed the Promised Land. In the late 1880s, the Summit Park Hotel was built, attracting visitors from across the nation. Though the hotel burned down in 1918, the area's popularity persisted, leading to the establishment of Mount Nebo as a state park in 1928.The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a crucial role in developing the park during the Great Depression. From 1933 to 1935, the CCC constructed many of the park's rustic-style cabins, trails, bridges, and pavilions using native stone and logs. Several of these structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, showcasing the enduring craftsmanship of the era.Today, Mount Nebo State Park offers a variety of activities and amenities. Visitors can explore over 32 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs. The Rim Trail, a 3.25-mile loop around the mountaintop, provides breathtaking views. The Bench Trail offers a more leisurely hike with minimal elevation change. For mountain bikers, the park boasts a 25-mile Monument Trail system with trails for all skill levels.The park also features 15 cabins and 34 campsites for overnight stays. The cabins offer modern amenities, while the campsites provide a more rustic experience. Other facilities include a swimming pool (seasonal fee required), tennis courts, picnic areas, and a visitor center with a gift shop.
