Discover more about Eddie Mae Herron Center/Museum

The Eddie Mae Herron Center/Museum stands as a vital cultural and educational hub in Pocahontas, Arkansas. It is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history and culture of African Americans in Randolph County. The center is housed in a building with a rich history itself, originally serving as St. Mary's African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and later as the Pocahontas Colored School. The building, a simple one-room wood-frame structure, was erected around 1918-1919. It served as both a church and a school for the small African American community in Pocahontas. For nearly half a century, it was the center of religious and educational activities for the local Black community. The building later functioned as a community center, daycare, and senior center. In 2000, spearheaded by Pat Johnson, the community formed a non-profit to create the Eddie Mae Herron Center, named after a beloved teacher at the Pocahontas Colored School. The museum features permanent and traveling exhibits highlighting African American history and the history of slavery in Arkansas. It also hosts annual events such as Juneteenth and Black History Month celebrations. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 as St. Mary's AME Church—Pocahontas Colored School. Visitors can expect a welcoming atmosphere and engaging exhibits. The center aims to promote appreciation and respect for African American culture through its various programs and displays.
