Unexpected Project: Fort Smith's Urban Art Revolution

The Unexpected Project is an ongoing urban art initiative that has transformed downtown Fort Smith into a dynamic destination for contemporary art. Launched in 2015, the project brings artists from around the globe to create large-scale murals and installations on the walls of historic buildings. The result is a captivating blend of art and architecture that revitalizes the city's core. More than 30 pieces of art can be found within a 10-square-block area, offering a free and accessible art experience for all. The murals reflect a diverse range of styles and themes, with some pieces paying homage to Fort Smith's Wild West history and its connection to Native American culture. Notable artists who have contributed to the project include D*Face, Guido van Helten, and VHILS. The Unexpected Project is curated by JUSTKIDS and organized by 64.6 Downtown, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a healthy and sustainable creative economy. Visitors can explore the artwork at any time, and printed maps are available at Miss Laura's Visitors Center.
