Discover more about Miss Laura's Visitor Center

Miss Laura's Visitor Center, located in a beautifully restored Victorian mansion at 2 N B St, Fort Smith, Arkansas, offers a unique window into the city's colorful past. Originally built in 1898 by Laura Ziegler, it opened in 1903 as one of six brothels on what was known as 'The Row,' Fort Smith's red-light district. Miss Laura's quickly became the most celebrated bordello in the Southwest, known for its sophisticated ladies and strict rules, including mandatory health checks. The building itself is a prime example of baroque Victorian architecture, featuring a mansard roof, wrought iron trim, and oeil-de-boeuf dormer windows. It operated as a brothel until 1948 and was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. After falling into disrepair, it was restored in the 1980s and reopened as a restaurant for a short time. In 1992, it found its current purpose as the city's visitor center. Today, visitors can take free guided tours of the building, explore exhibits showcasing local and period-correct artifacts, and learn about the stories of Miss Laura and the women who worked there. Knowledgeable volunteers share insights into the building's history and the city's past. Though the Fort Smith Visitor's Center will be relocating to Garrison Avenue, Miss Laura's remains an important relic of the city's past.
