Fort Smith National Historic Site, located in downtown Fort Smith, Arkansas, offers a captivating journey into the past. Established in 1961, the site encompasses the remains of two 19th-century military forts and the Federal Court for the Western District of Arkansas. Here, visitors can delve into the complex history of the American frontier, exploring the stories of soldiers, Native Americans, and outlaws who shaped the region. The original Fort Smith was established in 1817 to maintain peace between the Osage and Cherokee tribes. The site was later abandoned but re-established in 1838 to provide supplies to Native American tribes during the Trail of Tears. The second fort played a significant role during the Civil War, changing hands twice before remaining under Union control. The park's exhibits and preserved structures tell the stories of the past. Explore the foundations of the first fort, walk along the Trail of Tears overlook, and visit the commissary building, the oldest standing structure in Fort Smith. The visitor center, housed in the former barracks/courthouse/jail building, features exhibits on the military, the Trail of Tears, and the federal court, including Judge Parker's courtroom and two jails. Visitors can learn about Judge Isaac C. Parker, who presided over the court from 1872 to 1896, and the deputies who brought law and order to the region. The reconstructed gallows serve as a stark reminder of the justice meted out in this frontier town; eighty-six men were hanged for their crimes between 1873 and 1896.
