Discover more about AGFC Forrest L. Wood Crowley's Ridge Nature Center

The Forrest L. Wood Crowley's Ridge Nature Center, located on the southern edge of Jonesboro, Arkansas, serves as a gateway to the distinct ecosystems of Crowley's Ridge. This three-story, 17,033-square-foot facility, which opened in 2004, is dedicated to educating the public about the natural history, wildlife, and conservation efforts of the region. Inside, visitors can explore interactive exhibits that showcase the unique characteristics of the 200-mile-long Crowley's Ridge, a geological anomaly rising above the Mississippi Delta. Exhibits feature native wildlife, ranging from large game animals to small insects, and explain the natural forces that formed the ridge. A highlight is the two-story diorama depicting a thunderstorm and its effects on the ridge. Visitors can also view films about Arkansas's natural resources and Crowley's Ridge in the center's auditorium. Outside, the center offers a variety of trails that wind through diverse habitats, including wetlands, forests, and prairies. The quarter-mile Habitats Trail is a fully accessible loop around Willow Pond, allowing visitors to observe animals in uplands, wetlands, ponds, and prairies. For those seeking a longer hike, trails connect to the adjacent Craighead Forest Park. The grounds also feature wildlife gardens and native plants, attracting butterflies and other insects. The center is named after Forrest L. Wood, a former commissioner and longtime supporter of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC). It is one of four nature centers built by the AGFC after the passage of a conservation sales tax in 1996. The center offers educational programs, workshops, and self-guided activities for visitors of all ages.
