Discover more about Queen Wilhelmina State Park

Queen Wilhelmina State Park, often called the 'Castle in the Sky,' sits atop Rich Mountain in the Ouachita Mountains. The park's history dates back to 1898 when the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad built the Wilhelmina Inn to attract passengers to the area. The original inn, named in honor of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, offered a luxurious retreat with stunning views. Although the original inn fell into disrepair and closed in 1910, the state revitalized the site in 1957, establishing Queen Wilhelmina State Park. A new lodge was constructed, but it was destroyed by a fire in 1973. The current lodge, rebuilt and renovated, continues to welcome guests with modern amenities and historic charm. The Queen Wilhelmina Lodge features 40 guest rooms, a restaurant, and a meeting room. Visitors can explore the Wonder House, constructed in 1931, with its unique architecture and nine distinct levels. The park also offers outdoor activities such as hiking on the Reservoir Trail, Lover's Leap Trail, and Ouachita National Trail. The Talimena Scenic Drive, a National Scenic Byway, passes through the park, providing access to other historic sites and recreational opportunities.
