Discover more about Old South Restaurant

The Old South Restaurant is a Russellville institution, serving up classic American comfort food since 1947. Founded by Woody Mays, the original location was built in just six days using a modular design by William E. Stell's National Glass and Manufacturing Company. The restaurant quickly became a popular stop for travelers on U.S. Highway 64. The restaurant was known for being a favorite of celebrities, including Elvis Presley, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton. Diners could even sit in the same booth that Elvis famously occupied. The original building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 as a prime example of Art Moderne diner architecture. Sadly, a fire destroyed the original location in June 2023. However, the Old South was resurrected in October 2023 at a new location, ensuring that its legacy continues. Today, the Old South Restaurant continues to serve up its famous dishes, including all-day breakfast, chicken fried steak, and its unique chocolate gravy. The new location maintains the same warm and friendly atmosphere that made the original so popular.
