Discover more about The Old Mill

Nestled within the serene T.R. Pugh Memorial Park in North Little Rock, The Old Mill is a captivating replica of a 19th-century water-powered grist mill. Completed in 1933, the mill was the vision of Justin Matthews, who sought to create a tourist attraction for his Lakewood residential area, dedicated to the memory of Arkansas’ pioneers. Designed to appear timeworn and abandoned, the mill lacks doors and windows, mirroring the state of many actual mills in the 1930s. The renowned Mexican sculptor Dionicio Rodriguez brought the mill to life with his masterful faux bois technique, using concrete to mimic the textures of wood, stone, and iron. His artistry is evident in the surrounding park, where concrete toadstools, tree stumps, benches, and footbridges create a whimsical, naturalistic setting. Rodriguez's work is so detailed that the species of trees he replicated can be identified. The Old Mill gained fame after being featured in the opening scenes of the 1939 film 'Gone With the Wind'. It is believed to be the only remaining structure from the film. Several items within the Old Mill are actual historic relics, including the iron gristmill on the first floor dating back to 1828. Millstones used as seats bear dates from the 1820s and 1840. The Old Mill is a popular spot for weddings, photography, and leisurely strolls. Visitors can explore the park's winding paths, admire the craftsmanship of Rodriguez's sculptures, and immerse themselves in the tranquil atmosphere.
