Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden: An Oasis of Art

The Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden, nestled in Little Rock's scenic Riverfront Park, offers a captivating experience where art and nature intertwine. This unique garden features a diverse collection of over 90 sculptures by artists from Arkansas and across the country. The sculptures are thoughtfully arranged within landscaped outdoor 'rooms', creating an engaging and whimsical atmosphere. The garden's origins trace back to 2004 with an art show featuring local sculptors. Inspired by the Benson Sculpture Garden in Loveland, Colorado, Dean Kumpuris, a member of the Little Rock Board of Directors, envisioned a similar space for Little Rock. The Vogel Schwartz Foundation played a crucial role in making this vision a reality, providing support for the garden's development. The garden was dedicated on October 16, 2009. The sculptures themselves range from realistic depictions of animals to abstract forms, inviting visitors to observe and reflect. The garden's design incorporates natural terraces and walkways, encouraging leisurely exploration. Boulders from nearby Petit Jean Mountain and steel panels add to the gallery-like feel, creating surprising visual elements around every corner. One notable piece is a bronze bust of Daisy Bates, a civil rights activist and leader of the Little Rock NAACP. The Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden is located on the Arkansas River Trail, making it easily accessible for walkers and bikers. It serves as a venue for events like receptions and weddings. The annual Sculpture at the River Market event contributes to the garden's collection, with a selected piece added each year.
