The Texarkana Museums System (TMS) is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the cultural heritage of the Ark-La-Tex region, including Northwest Louisiana, Northeast Texas, South Arkansas, and the Southeastern tip of Oklahoma. TMS operates the Museum of Regional History, which opened in 1971 in the oldest surviving brick building in Texarkana. The Museum of Regional History features exhibits ranging from Caddo Indian artifacts to items related to ragtime pianist Scott Joplin, and a replica of late Congressman Wright Patman's office. The museum also houses an archive of over 25,000 photographs, scrapbooks, and other research materials available to the public by appointment. The Museum of Regional History is designated as a welcome center for the Downtown Arts and Historic District. TMS is a non-profit educational organization that provides learning experiences focused on history, science, art, and music. It is committed to the collection and conservation of materials relating to the human occupation of the region and to enhancing cultural opportunities for all its residents.
