Arkansas Post National Memorial preserves the rich and complex history of a site that served as the first European colony in the Mississippi River Valley. Founded in 1686 by French explorer Henri de Tonti, the "Poste de Arkansea" became a vital trading post and military garrison, playing a key role in the struggle between France, Spain, and England for control of the region.Over the centuries, Arkansas Post served as a strategic location for various powers, witnessing the only Revolutionary War skirmish in Arkansas, known as the Colbert Raid. Following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, it became part of the United States and thrived as a river port, becoming the first capital of the Arkansas Territory from 1819 to 1821.The memorial encompasses the historic townsite, where visitors can walk the trails and imagine life in this once-bustling settlement. The visitor center features exhibits detailing the area's history, archaeological finds, and the Civil War battle that took place here. In January 1863, Union troops captured a Confederate fort after a two-day battle, ensuring control of the Arkansas River.
