Delta Heritage Trail State Park: A Journey Through Time and Nature

The Delta Heritage Trail State Park offers a unique recreational experience, converting an abandoned Union Pacific Railroad corridor into a scenic trail for hikers and cyclists. The park is located in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, also known as the Arkansas Delta, and stretches across Phillips, Arkansas, and Desha counties. The trail is being developed in phases, with approximately 69.3 miles currently open for public use. The completed sections include a northern corridor from Lexa to Snow Lake and a southern section between Arkansas City and the White River at Yancopin. The trail's surface is primarily packed limestone, offering a firm and ADA-compliant path for most users. As you traverse the trail, you'll encounter a diverse landscape, including native hardwood forests, agricultural fields, and streams. The area is rich in wildlife, offering opportunities for birdwatching and observing various species native to the Arkansas Delta. Keep an eye out for remnants of the railroad's past, such as elevated paths and branch lines that once served nearby communities. The park's visitor center is located at the Barton trailhead, near the northern end of the trail. Here, you can find maps, a gift shop, restrooms, picnic sites, and bicycle rentals. Primitive campsites are also available for those who wish to extend their stay and immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.
