Akhtala Monastery-Fortress: A Medieval Armenian Masterpiece

Perched on a high cliff overlooking the town of Akhtala, the Akhtala Monastery-Fortress is a remarkable example of Armenian medieval architecture and artistry. Founded in the 10th century by the Kyurikids, a branch of the Bagratuni dynasty, the fortress, originally known as Pghndzahank (Copper Mine), owes its name to the area's rich copper deposits.
