The Kobayr Monastery Complex, located in Kober Village, Lori Province, is a significant religious and historical site in Armenia. Founded in 1171 by Princess Mariam, daughter of King Kiurike II, the monastery served as a vital spiritual, cultural, and literary center in Northern Armenia during the Middle Ages. The complex comprises several structures, including the main church dedicated to Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), chapels, a bell tower-tomb, a refectory, and a cemetery. The architecture showcases a blend of Armenian and Georgian influences, reflecting the monastery's history under both Armenian and Georgian Orthodox tutelage. One of the most remarkable features of Kobayr is its well-preserved frescoes, which adorn the walls of the main church and chapel. These murals, created in the Byzantine style, depict religious scenes and figures, offering a glimpse into the artistic excellence of the medieval period. Throughout its history, Kobayr Monastery has been influenced by several royal and aristocratic dynasties, including the Bagratunis, Kyurikians, and Zakarians. The monastery also houses the tomb of Prince Shanshe Zakarian, son of Zakare II Zakarian, and a bell tower built in 1279 to house the tombs of Zakarian and his wife Vaneni.
