Sanahin Bridge: A Medieval Masterpiece

Spanning the Debed River in Alaverdi, the Sanahin Bridge stands as a striking example of medieval Armenian engineering. Constructed in the late 12th century, around 1192, it's considered one of the most remarkable bridges of its time. Queen Vaneni, the sister of Princes Ivane and Zakare Zakarian, commissioned the bridge in memory of her late husband, King Abas Kyurikian. This construction marked a cultural and architectural revival in the region after its liberation from Seljuk rule. The bridge is built from finely hewn basalt stones and reinforced with lime mortar. It features a single arch with a span of 18.6 meters and a total length of 60 meters. The width at its center is between 3.3 and 3.5 meters. Its unique design incorporates the challenging terrain of the Debed canyon, with one bank significantly lower than the other. The bridge's architect skillfully minimized stonework in the river and reduced the volume of masonry. Adornments include double arch bands and four lion sculptures, symbolizing guardianship, at the corners of the parapet. These lions are emblems of the Kiurikian dynasty. The bridge has undergone multiple restorations since the late 19th century. Until the 1960s, it was used for motor transport but has since been converted into a pedestrian walkway. The bridge withstood the May 2024 flooding of the Debed River, which damaged seventeen bridges in the area. Today, the Sanahin Bridge is a national monument protected by the state and a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Sanahin Monastery. It is a symbol of Alaverdi and is featured on the town's coat of arms.
