    Discover more about Lori Castle

Lori Castle, or Lori Berd, is a captivating medieval fortress nestled in Armenia's Lori Province, approximately 5 km from Stepanavan. Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, the fortress stands at 1,490 meters above sea level, strategically positioned on a plateau at the intersection of the Dzoraget and Miskhana rivers. Its location along a northern trade route connecting Ani, Dvin, Dmanisi, and Tbilisi made it a vital commercial and political hub. Founded by David Anhoghin in the early 11th century, Lori Castle became the capital of the Kingdom of Tashir-Dzoraget in 1065. During its peak, the fortress was home to over 10,000 residents. Throughout its history, Lori Castle has been under the control of various powers, including the Seljuks, Georgians, and Mongols. In 1236, it was captured and destroyed by Mongol forces, but it was later rebuilt and remained an important military stronghold until the 18th century. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Lori Castle, including sections of the fortification walls, bathhouses, and a civic building that was later converted into a church. The fortress features a 214-meter-long wall with towers, offering stunning views of the surrounding canyons. Excavations have revealed artifacts showcasing the region's role in long-distance trade, including ceramics, ornaments, and coins from Georgia, Persia, and Central Asia.
