  • Public Transport

    From Alaverdi, take bus #3 to the Sanahin suburb. The bus departs from the Alaverdi bus and train stations every 30 minutes and costs 100 AMD. The bus will drop you off in a central square, from where it is a 15-minute walk to the monastery.

    Taxis are readily available in Alaverdi. A taxi ride from Alaverdi to Sanahin Monastery typically costs around 1000 AMD. Negotiate the price before starting your journey.

  • Walking

    It is possible to walk from upper Alaverdi to Sanahin. From the 12th-century bridge of Sanahin, you can walk up to the top of the canyon and further to Sanahin Monastery. The walk from the central square in Sanahin suburb to the monastery is about 15 minutes.

Sanahin Monastery, meaning "this one is older than that one," is a remarkable monastic complex in the Lori Province of Armenia. Founded in 966 by King Ashot III Voghormats, its history may extend even further back to the 4th century. The monastery served as an important cultural and educational center during the medieval period.The complex comprises several significant structures, including the Church of the Holy Mother of God (St. Astvatsatsin), the Church of the Holy Savior (St. Amenaprkich), and the Chapel of St. Gregory. St. Astvatsatsin, built between 928 and 944, is the oldest structure, showcasing a cruciform dome design. St. Amenaprkich, constructed in 966 under Queen Khosrovanush, is the largest and most dominant building in the complex.Sanahin Monastery was not just a religious center but also a hub for learning. It housed a scriptorium, where manuscripts were created and preserved, and an academy that offered studies in theology, philosophy, medicine, and more. The monastery's library was renowned for its collection of books. The complex also features unique structures like the bell tower, built between 1211 and 1235, and the family tombs of the Kyurikyans and Zakaryans.In 2001, UNESCO recognized the outstanding universal value of Sanahin Monastery by including it in its list of World Heritage Sites. Today, visitors can explore the complex, admire its architecture, and immerse themselves in the serene atmosphere of this historical and spiritual landmark.
