Discover more about Hovhannes Shiraz House-Museum

The Hovhannes Shiraz House-Museum, located in Gyumri, Armenia, is dedicated to preserving the legacy of one of Armenia's most beloved poets. Hovhannes Shiraz, born in Gyumri (then Alexandropol) in 1915, made his literary debut in 1935 and quickly rose to prominence. The museum is housed in a 19th-century mansion built with black and red stone, featuring a beautiful gate that leads to an inner courtyard. In 1983, the house was presented to Shiraz by government officials, but he lived there for less than a year before his death in 1984. The building later became a house-museum. The 1988 earthquake interrupted the refurbishment, and the house provided shelter for homeless families. The museum officially opened in 2003. The museum consists of six rooms that display Shiraz's personal belongings, manuscripts, and works. One room is furnished as it was during Shiraz's lifetime, while others showcase his creative works, paintings, and sculptures. The museum also hosts events and exhibitions dedicated to Shiraz's heritage and Armenian literature. A painting from American author John Steinbeck, thanking Shiraz for his hospitality in Yerevan, is also on display. A visit to the Hovhannes Shiraz House-Museum offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the life and work of a poet whose words captured the soul of the Armenian people.
