Discover more about Levon's Divine Underground

Hidden beneath an unassuming home in Arinj, a village near Yerevan, lies Levon's Divine Underground, a testament to one man's vision and dedication. Levon Arakelyan, a builder by trade, began this extraordinary project in 1985 at the request of his wife, Tosya, who simply wanted a cellar to store potatoes. What followed was an incredible 23-year endeavor, as Levon tirelessly carved into the earth, creating a multi-level network of caves, tunnels, and chambers. Using only hand tools like hammers and chisels, Levon worked without blueprints or architectural guidance, relying on his intuition and a sense of divine inspiration. The result is a sprawling labyrinth that descends 21 meters (70 feet) below ground and covers over 300 square meters. The cave system features intricate corridors, spiral staircases, and uniquely decorated rooms adorned with sculptures and religious symbols. Visitors can explore the depths of Levon's Divine Underground, guided by his wife, Tosya, or other family members who share the stories and legends surrounding its creation. The site includes a small museum displaying Levon's tools and personal belongings, offering insight into his life's work. The underground chambers maintain a stable temperature of around 10°C (50°F) year-round, adding to the unique atmosphere. Levon's Divine Underground is more than just a physical structure; it represents the resilience, creativity, and spiritual devotion of one man. It's a place where visitors can marvel at the beauty and meaning that can be created in the most unexpected of places, a true hidden gem of Armenia.
