Discover more about Saghmosavank

Saghmosavank Monastery, meaning "Monastery of the Psalms," is a captivating 13th-century Armenian monastic complex located in the village of Saghmosavan, in the Aragatsotn Province. The monastery is situated on the edge of the deep Kasakh River gorge, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. From this vantage point, one can see Mounts Ararat, Aragats, and Ara. According to legend, Gregory the Illuminator founded the church in the 4th century after seeing the location from the slopes of Mount Aragats. He then taught psalms to clergymen here, giving the monastery its name. Historical records, however, only mention Saghmosavank at the end of the 12th century. The monastery served as a significant spiritual, cultural, and educational center in medieval Armenia. A higher school operated here from the 13th century. The Vachutyan dynasty supported the monastery, which became known for its rich collection of books and manuscripts. The complex includes the Church of Saint Zion, a gavit (a covered courtyard), a repository of manuscripts, and the Church of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother). Prince Vache Vachutyan built the main church, Saint Zion, in 1215. The church is a cross-domed structure with two-story vestries in each corner. The gavit was constructed in the early 13th century. In 1255, Prince Kurd Vachutyan and his wife built the Saint Astvatsatsin church-library to commemorate their late daughter. The library housed a collection of 120 manuscripts in the 13th century. Saghmosavank was also a significant center for calligraphy. Though frequently damaged throughout its history, Saghmosavank was always restored. The monastery was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1988, but it was renovated between 1998 and 2000. Today, Saghmosavank stands as a testament to Armenia's rich religious and cultural heritage, drawing visitors with its stunning architecture and serene atmosphere.
