Discover more about Smbataberd

Smbataberd, meaning "Fortress of Smbat," is a captivating medieval fortress strategically positioned on a hilltop between the villages of Artabuynk and Yeghegis in the Vayots Dzor Province of Armenia. Its location is no accident; deep gorges surround it on three sides, providing a natural defense, while the entrance is fortified with imposing stone walls. Though the exact construction date remains debated, evidence suggests its existence during the 5th century, playing a role in the Battle of Avarayr between Armenians and Persians. Other sources suggest construction during the 9th to 11th centuries. Regardless, Smbataberd served as a crucial citadel for the princes of Syunik, particularly when Yeghegis was their seat. The fortress may have been named in honor of Prince Smbat of Syunik in the 10th century or a duke of the Orbelian dynasty. Spanning nearly a kilometer, Smbataberd is divided by a wall into northern and southern sections, each with its own acropolis. Within these sections, remnants of barracks and cisterns have been discovered. The fortress's design reflects medieval military architecture principles, emphasizing long-term defense. Its walls, constructed from large basalt stones, are 2-3 meters wide, attesting to its strength. Smbataberd's strategic importance is further highlighted by its history of withstanding sieges. A local legend recounts how Seljuk Turks, in their only successful capture of the fortress, located and cut off the water supply. Despite the ravages of time, the fortress's exterior walls, towers, and keep remain largely intact, a testament to the ingenuity of its builders. Restoration efforts in 2006-2007 have further preserved its original glory, making it a compelling destination for tourists. Today, Smbataberd offers visitors panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including Mount Texar. The site is easily combined with a visit to the nearby Tsakhats Kar Monastery, offering a glimpse into Armenia's rich medieval past.
