Discover more about Black Fortress

The Black Fortress, known locally as Sev Berd (Սև բերդ), is a striking historical landmark in Gyumri, Armenia. Constructed in the 1830s, the fortress was a strategic response to potential conflicts with Turkey following the Russo-Persian War. Commander Hans Karl von Diebitsch emphasized the necessity of fortifying Alexandropol (now Gyumri) as a vital military outpost. The fortress is built from black tuff stone, giving it a distinctive dark appearance and its name. Its circular design and robust architecture exemplify 19th-century military engineering. The complex originally included underground passages connecting it to the Red Fortress and the area where the Mother Armenia monument now stands. These passages, along with a sophisticated drainage system and strategically placed artillery points, were designed to withstand enemy attacks. Over the years, the Black Fortress has served various purposes. Initially a military prison, it later became an artillery depot after Russia gained ground in Kars and Batumi. In 2005, it was acquired by businessman Hayk Hayrapetyan and later sold to the Balasanyan family in 2012. Today, the fortress is undergoing reconstruction to transform it into a major tourist attraction, featuring a spacious amphitheater that hosts concerts and forums. Visitors can explore the fortress walls, discover engravings left by Russian soldiers, and appreciate the panoramic views of Gyumri and the surrounding landscape.
