Discover more about Hovhannes Shiraz House-Museum

The Hovhannes Shiraz House-Museum, located in Gyumri, stands as a tribute to one of Armenia's most beloved poets. The museum is situated in an old mansion dating back to the 19th century, constructed with black and red stone. This building was once the home of a wealthy merchant. In 1983, the government presented the house to Shiraz, but he resided there for only a year before his death in 1984. The museum officially opened in 2003, showcasing Shiraz's personal belongings, manuscripts, and works. The exhibits provide insights into his life, creative path, and the historical and cultural influences that shaped his poetry. The museum consists of six rooms; the first room details the poet's childhood, while the second is furnished to reflect Shiraz's time. The other rooms display his creative works, paintings, and personal items. After the earthquake in 1988, the mansion provided temporary shelter for families who had lost their homes. The USAID Housing Purchase Certificate Program assisted in relocating these displaced families to permanent housing. Today, the museum welcomes visitors to explore the legacy of Hovhannes Shiraz and learn about Armenian literary heritage.
